To enable IDG to validate root certificate

As cloud service providers increasingly move towards automated certificate renewal processes, gateway flexibility in certificate validation becomes crucial. The ability to validate using root certificates helps prevent API 500 SSL errors during automatic renewals.

For IBM Datapower Gateway (IDG), the following validation methods is available:

  • Match exact certificate or immediate issuer

  • Full certificate chain checking (PKIX)

  • Match exact certificate

AWS's auto-renewal system, for instance, triggers renewal of both intermediate and leaf/base certificates. AWS recommends adding the root certificate to the truststore to maintain uninterrupted service during renewals.

The impending change by Certificate Authority (CA) communities to reduce maximum TLS certificate lifetimes to 47 days further emphasises the importance of robust automated certificate management. This shorter lifecycle will require more sophisticated validation methods and automated renewal processes to maintain service availability.
