Logical Grouping of Kafka Topics by Organization/Tenant

Introduce a new capability in Kafka to allow Kafka Topics to be logically grouped under organizations, tenants, applications, or environments.

Developers and platform administrators could organize topics into separate logical groups representing different applications, products, business domains, or development environments (e.g., DEV, UAT, SIT, and PROD). This would provide a structured hierarchy for managing large numbers of topics and make topic discovery, administration, and governance significantly easier.

Where technically feasible, the logical grouping could also be mapped to physical storage or infrastructure boundaries, such as dedicated storage volumes, disks, or data directories. This would provide better control over data placement, storage management, performance isolation, and operational activities.

The proposed grouping structure could be exposed through the Kafka Topics Management Portal, allowing users to browse, filter, search, and manage topics based on their organization, application, environment, or other defined logical grouping.

Expected Benefits

  • Improved organization and discoverability of Kafka topics.
  • Better separation between applications and environments.
  • Easier administration and governance of large Kafka platforms.
  • Improved storage and infrastructure management.
  • Potential for better performance and operational isolation.
  • A clearer and more intuitive experience through the Topics Management Portal.
