Federated API Gateway Management for Centralized Governance and Operations

Many organizations use multiple API gateways (webMethods API Gateway, Apigee, Kong, MuleSoft, Azure API Management, AWS API Gateway, etc.), resulting in fragmented API catalogs, inconsistent governance, and dispersed monitoring.

I propose adding a Federation Framework to webMethods API Gateway that can connect to and discover APIs from third-party API gateways, providing a single pane of glass for enterprise API management.

Key capabilities:

  • Centralized API catalog across all federated gateways.
  • API integrity checks to detect duplicates, inconsistencies, and obsolete APIs.
  • Unified monitoring and analytics for all APIs regardless of gateway technology.
  • Enterprise-wide governance and compliance reporting.
  • Hybrid and multi-cloud API visibility.

As an advanced capability, webMethods API Gateway could also act as a federated control plane, allowing authorized users to perform basic operational tasks on external gateways, such as:

  • Enable/disable APIs.
  • Promote APIs between environments (DEV, TEST, PROD).
  • Deprecate or retire APIs.
  • Update API lifecycle status and metadata.
  • Execute bulk administrative actions across gateways.
