Enhance ILMT functionality to display subcapacity shared pool values for virtual machines hosted on VMware.

Proposal: Enhance ILMT Functionality to Display Subcapacity Shared Pool Values for VMware-Hosted VMs

As ILMT (IBM License Metric Tool) is a critical component for software asset and license management, particularly in virtualized environments like VMware, enhancing its functionality to include subcapacity shared pool values in the Hardware Report would bring significant operational and financial benefits.

Key Benefits:

Improved License Cost Accuracy: Subcapacity licensing is often based on shared pool consumption rather than full capacity. Including these values directly in the Hardware Report allows for more precise tracking and cost allocation, reducing the risk of over-licensing or non-compliance.

Streamlined Audits and Reporting: Having shared pool metrics readily available simplifies audit preparation and internal reporting, making it easier to demonstrate compliance with IBM’s subcapacity licensing terms.

Operational Efficiency: Site Reliability Engineers and asset managers can make faster, data-driven decisions regarding resource allocation and license optimization, especially in dynamic VMware environments.

Risk Mitigation: Visibility into shared pool usage helps identify potential licensing risks early, enabling proactive remediation before they escalate into costly compliance issues.

Alignment with VMware Architecture: Since VMware often consolidates workloads into shared resource pools, this enhancement aligns ILMT’s reporting capabilities with real-world infrastructure setups, improving relevance and usability.
