Floating IP for Native HA Queue Manager in RHEL

  • RDQM supports Floating IP, allowing a single virtual IP address to automatically move to the active node during failover, enabling transparent client reconnection.
  • Native HA, by contrast, requires clients to be configured with a CCDT (Client Channel Definition Table) listing all three replica endpoints, relying on client-side connection retry logic to find the active instance.

Business Justification
Consistency Across HA Offerings – Provides feature parity between RDQM and Native HA, reducing the learning curve and operational complexity for teams managing both.
Simplified Network/Firewall Rules – A single floating IP simplifies firewall, load balancer, and routing configuration compared to managing three separate node IPs.

Thank you for sharing this idea and highlighting its importance. We appreciate the thought and effort that went into proposing it.

After reviewing the suggestion, our current view is that the intended outcome can be achieved using existing Linux high availability utilities, such as keepalived. As a result, we do not currently see a strong need to add this capability directly within IBM MQ.

That said, we will leave the idea open for voting and comments so that we can gather additional feedback and better understand the level of community interest.

A sample showing how to configure a floating IP address using keepalived with IBM MQ high availability solutions can be found here:

Thank you again for your contribution and for helping shape the future direction of IBM MQ.

IBM MQ Native HA Floating IP Functionality

Merged
During a recent installation and build of IBM MQ Native HA on RHEL 9, I found that floating IP functionality for the queue manager is not included natively in the product. As a workaround, I'm using keepalived to provide this functionality. (Refer...
