Dynamic reduction for SMDS after extends

During a MQ Health Check, an IBM MQ expert gave us an advice to use SMDS instead of DB2 offloading for shared MQ Messages. It has much more performance than using DB2 for offloading. Unfortunately, the size of the SMDS increase if MQ has a big workload with much shared messages which must be offloaded. The big SMDS stays big until someone reduces it by hand.

We recognise that this is a valid requirement. However it doesn't fit with our delivery plans for the next couple of years.

As a result we are declining this Idea. While declined the Idea can still be voted, and commented, upon.

"A shared message data set is defined as a VSAM linear data set (LDS). "
As such, this is not a function of MQ, but VSAM processing to reduce the size.
While I agree on the concept, I would down vote.
As a possible option to reducing downtime - create an alternate SMDS,
After shutdown, a) rename the original to backup, b) rename alternate to original, and restart - should be quick.
Also SHARED queues are usually used in a PLEX - wouldn't the "other" qmgr in a plex be 'up' (therefore no downtime)?
