Cache CRLCDP in WMQ Queue Manager

IBM WMQ to cache CRLCDP files inside the queue manager for a customer specified time to live and then redrive the download of the CRLCDP file asynchronously. In this way the customer has control over how long they trust a certificate not to have been revoked and unnecessary calls to internet URLs to download CRLCDP files are eliminated.

We recognise that this is a valid requirement. However it doesn't fit with our delivery plans for the next couple of years.

As a result we are declining this Idea. While declined the Idea can still be voted, and commented, upon.

Due to processing by IBM, this request was reassigned to have the following updated attributes:
    Brand - WebSphere
    Product family - Integration
    Product - IBM MQ

For recording keeping, the previous attributes were:
    Brand - WebSphere
Product family - Connectivity and Integration

Firstly, it is well worth considering OCSP as an alternative to CRLs because it only sends small responses. A CRL contains the list of all certificates ever revoked by a CA, which is why they tend to become large enough to cause performance problems over time. By contrast, OCSP only contains the revocation status for the requested certificate.

Secondly, it's worth considering solutions such as JMS session pooling and conversation sharing as a means of prolonging the connection lifespan and avoiding duplicate handshakes. Arguably an MQ application which repeatedly connects and disconnects has not been very well designed.

On many platforms, there is already some level of caching for CRLs retrieved from an LDAP server (though not via HTTP, or when the CRL is indicated via CDP certificate extensions). Extending this to HTTP and making the cache timings more configurable is something we would consider for the future.
