Mainframe MQ product adopting OpenTelemetry

What is IBM's plan to adopt OpenTelemetry standard for the Mainframe Messaging feature?

WAS Liberty could be utilised to expose Metrics, Logs, Tracing. This is on top the current approach exposing key metrics through the native SMF dataset.

Thanks Mark. However, the reasoning here is to start on the MQ but with an aim to adopt it for the entire MF.

The SMF can stay as it is, but we are looking at how the SMF data can be extracted out into OpenMetrics format to be consumed. Currently from what I understand, SMF is stored in Hex and in order to get the data readable we have to use tool such as iZPCA to export it out into a tabular format stored in DB2.

For our customers wanting to see some of these metrics stored in SMF, this doesn't make it any easier for them. Hence why we are looking at "cncf open standards" - OpenTelemetry.

    Thanks

We do not think it likely that we would do this as an alternative to existing mechanisms such as SMF for exposing that kind of metric. OpenTelemetry, or similar technologies, are already supported for "message/transaction tracking" purposes by several 3rd party products working across the MQ family, and we think that will continue for the forseeable timeframe.
