On-Demand Activity Logging Toggle for APIs

Summary:
Currently, API activity logging in IBM API Connect can only be enabled or disabled during the API publication process. This requires republishing the API every time a change to the activity-logging configuration is needed, which introduces operational overhead and unnecessary deployment cycles.

Enhancement Request:
Introduce a feature within API Manager (UI and CLI) that allows on-demand toggling of API activity logging without republishing the API. Administrators or API owners should be able to enable or disable activity logging per API instance directly from the management interface or via command-line, with immediate effect.

Business Value:

  • Reduces operational overhead by eliminating the need for republishing APIs.

  • Improves agility for troubleshooting and audit purposes by allowing quick activation of detailed logging.

  • Minimizes downtime and risk during production incidents.

Example Use Case:
During an incident investigation, operations teams often need to temporarily enable activity logging for a specific API to trace incoming requests. The current process requires creating a new draft, updating the logging configuration, and republishing - which is time-consuming and error-prone. The proposed feature would allow immediate toggling of logging state, improving response times and operational efficiency.
