Add business metrics to Instana traces for IIB and ACE

The current implementation of both IBM Integration Bus (IIB) and App Connect Enterprise (ACE) could emit business metrics through monitoring events which are published through MQ topics. A similar implementation with the connection through OpenTelemetry to Instana would be nice in order to send a limited amount of business data along with the trace information. Such an implementation will allow to create a similar linkage between IIB / ACE and Instana like the existing linkage between business process monitoring (BPM) and application performance monitoring (APM) that Instana provides by adding additional fields to the OpenTelemetry protocol. This idea has already been initially discussed between customer and IBM: Kasper Netterstrom, Claus Ramstedt Petersen, Chris Bailey (Instana), Cross Ganaway (Instana) & Ben Thompson (ACE). The technical experts agreed that such an implementation would be beneficial to both Instana as well as IIB / ACE.

    Idea review. Thank you for taking the time to raise this suggestion and also for the direct conversation which we had on this matter. As noted, we can see value for ACE users in adding deeper information (aka "business metrics") about their flows, and this was the motivator for the Business Transaction Monitoring feature of the product. Of course, this feature relies on the publication of more detailed information from the integration server, which brings with it operational overhead. With this background, the OpenTelemetry open source initiative has been gaining traction as a means of distributing lighter-weight span information to help track time spent in different communicating applications. Providing deeper info whilst avoiding greater overhead is a conundrum - we think this would best be solved by transmitting a URL link with the OpenTelemetry spans which links the user to additional information (potentially in an ACE BTM or Record & Replay data store) which is then published in the traditional form. This would avoid bloating the Open Telemetry messages. Status of the suggestion is updated to Future Consideration.
