APP Connect Enterprise Opentelemetry Exporter needs additional header to send OTLP data

Dear colleagues,

A customer wants to trace ACE with Instana using native tracing, for that we have an Instana documentation:

https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/instana-observability/current?topic=ace-configuring-tracing-in#configuring-ace-native-tracing that refers to ACE page: https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/app-connect/12.0?topic=management-configuring-opentelemetry-trace-integration-server for configuring OpenTelemetryManager.

But once they follow the procedure they see errors in log that additional key is required: BIP9570E: OpenTelemetry error: '[OTLP TRACE GRPC Exporter] Export() failed with status_code: "INTERNAL" error_message: "Header x-instana-key is missing"' - '[]'.

The header is required for Instana when OTLP data is being sent to Instana backend directly and uses the header to differentiate to which tenant the environment belongs. Following the links above it looks like OpenTelemetryManager doesn't allow to specify the HTTP headers.

it works perfect when I specify header X-INSTANA-KEY for example for HTTP way like:

curl -kL -XPOST -H "X-INSTANA-KEY: ${AGENT_KEY}" -H "Content-Type: application/json" https://otlp-http.${INSTANA_BACKEND}/v1/traces --data '{"resourceSpans": [{"resource": {"attributes": [{"key": "service.name","value": {"stringValue": "my.service"}}]},"scopeSpans": [{"spans": [{"traceId": "5b8aa5a2d2c872e832","spanId":"051581bf3cb55c14","name": "I am a span!","startTimeUnixNano": 1689969302000000000,"endTimeUnixNano": 1689970000000000000,"attributes": [{"key": "my.span.attr","value": {"stringValue": "some value"}}]}]}]}]}'

Please consider adding the functionality to OpenTelemetryManager.

Thank you

    Hi Oleg,

Thanks for clarifying - moving this to the ACE team for appropriate action

Hello Andy, yes we tried to use Instana agent, but customer refused to install agent on the same host, so we tried to configure ACE OpentTelemetryManager with Instana Backend endpoint (exposed otlp-acceptor service), it didn't work because of the x-instana-key. As a workaround customer has to provision external VM just for the agent and configure agent to listen of "external" IP address as a workaround. But if we would be able to specify x-instana-key in ACE OpentTelemetryManager there would be no need for the customer to provision and maintain extra VM.

Thanks for this - when you say "when OTLP data is being sent to Instana backend directly " - are you using the Instana agent on OCP - or connecting some other way?
