Alternative Inventory Scanning of Datapower Gateway Appliances

This was raised by one of our customer teams, due to it leading to a significant impact on their ITAM inventory.

In order to take inventory of Datapower Gateway Appliances - this would be necessary to gather hardware and software data to draw IBM licensing conclusions - to my knowledge you must currently use the embedded ILMT scanner.
I believe DataPower appliances currently embed said scanner, which can be enabled through settings - discussed here: https://community.ibm.com/community/user/automation/discussion/ilmt-for-virtual-appliances-api-connect-and-datapower-gateway-on-vmware#:~:text=Reply-,Hi%20Tommy%2C,-IBM%20Data%20Power

In order to get visibility over their Datapower Appliances, it was necessary to deploy a whole ILMT solution to inventory these machines.
Our own solutions cannot ingest the Datapower Appliance output, and the Appliances themselves cannot have our Inventory Agent installed upon them due to their locked-down nature.

I'd therefore request an alternative solution to gather the hardware and software inventory necessary for subcapacity licensing on these appliances - the ability to deploy an external Agent or an API which might gather that data instead, perhaps.

Thanks kindly!

Jack

Hi Ulas, thanks for coming back to us!

The concern here is that, even with the APIs, the exported data MUST be imported into ILMT to be utilised.
The content is encrypted, so must be read into ILMT then exported out in order for our solutions to read its' inventory data. Hence the need on our customer site for this additional ILMT instance which is only necessary to inventory their datapower instances.

    Kind regards,

    Jack

Hi Jack – Thank you for raising this request.

IBM DataPower Gateway virtual appliance embeds the ILMT Disconnected Scanner and provides an option to manage the scan and generation of the ILMT disconnected scanner out packages within the IBM DataPower gateway file system within a predefined directory.(Link) The export of these packages can be automated, via utilising file transfer commands (Link), or REST management interface(Link) or through the XML management interface (Link). Hence the status is updated to “Functionality already exists”.

But if these APIs don’t meet your requirement, please could you clarify what output you would expect to get from the API. This will allow us to understand better and the idea might be reopened for additional feedback in the future.
